Key findings

To better and quickly understand the problem, I did research to understand children’s behaviour, parents’ hope and worries. Here is a summary.

Children's behaviour

  • Children (Age 3-6), they look forward to a bit of challenge.

  • They need Instant visual and audio feedback.

  • Researches proves that children can focus on only one object at a time.

  • They need parental controls.

Parents' worries and hopes

  • Parents worry about inappropriate content from the internet.

  • Parents worry about the children spend more time playing indoor on digital devices.

  • Parents hope that children can learn during the play.

  • Parents feel that they have not spent enough time to interact with their children.

Exploring music adventure

Children (age 3-6) are curious about the things around them. The "exploration" feature is to meet the children's curiosity and encourage them to find music in the real world.

Parents

To start the exploration game, parents put these stickers anywhere home. And let the children to find them.

Children

Once the kids find the sticker, they can use the Spotify Kids mobile app to scan the sticker and enjoy a song which is hidden in the sticker.

Parents

In the online store, parents can buy sets of stickers. Each sticker contains a song, and it works as barcode.

Recommending music based on time

  • Based on your child's schedule and time, Spotify Kids recommend music for kids for different times or seasons.

  • During day time, children can search for music by “exploring”.

  • At night, the lullaby will automatically appear on the first page.

Design for children

Spotify Kids is designed to meet the needs of little users.

  • Since the child can't read or they are still in the literacy stage. But they may need to search. With voice input, all results will be presented as images with text.

  • All the interfaces are simple with no redundant information.

  • Removed bottom navigation bar. The navigation bar contains multiple layers of information which are not easy for children. To show the navigations for the parents, the menu buttons placed in the upper right corner that was not easily touched.

  • Parents can click on the menu and enter the password to enter the parent's page, where they can set up time limits, access shops, create playlists...
